Chanel's St. Supéry Acquires Historic Rudd Estate

St. Supéry has officially acquired Oakville’s Rudd Estate and Crossroads brand, marking a major expansion for its owner, Chanel. This deal secures Chanel’s second Napa Valley foothold alongside its Rutherford estate, adding 65 total acres - including 47 acres of prime vineyards - to its portfolio.

The undisclosed purchase encompasses the brand, existing inventory, and the physical property. A dollar value was not disclosed.

While the motivation behind the sale remains undisclosed, the acquisition aligns St. Supéry and parent company Chanel with a like-minded partner dedicated to high-quality, estate-grown wines and sustainable hospitality.

Chanel has now gained a prestigious foothold in Oakville, a premier Napa sub-appellation famous for its elite red Bordeaux varieties.

This move strategically complements St. Supéry’s existing production of Sauvignon Blanc and reds from its Rutherford and Dollarhide sites. The synergy between the two estates bolsters Chanel’s portfolio, combining Oakville’s sought-after terroir with St. Supéry’s established Napa legacy.

Third-generation French vintner Robert Skalli founded St. Supéry in 1982. All of their wines are made from their own Napa Valley vineyards. With the purchase, they now own more than 1,650 acres of land, 600 of those acres planted to vines, on four distinct parcels: the Dollarhide Estate Vineyard in northeastern Napa Valley, their two Rutherford Estate Vineyards and now the Rudd Estate in Oakville.

Since acquiring St. Supéry in 2015, Chanel Group (Better known for its luxury fashion portfolio) has aggressively expanded its premium wine portfolio. Beyond its Napa holdings, the luxury giant owns three prestigious Bordeaux estates—Château Berliquet, Château Canon, and Château Rauzan-Ségla—alongside Provence’s Domaine de l'Ile.

The group's influence also extends across the entire supply chain, including the Bordeaux négociant Ulysse Cazabonne and European wine retailer Lavinia.

Samantha Rudd.

Food and wine entrepreneur Leslie Rudd founded Rudd Estate after purchasing Napa’s Girard winery in 1996.

He transformed it into Rudd Oakville Estate, known for outstanding estate grown Cabernet Sauvignons. That same year, he acquired a majority stake in specialty grocer Dean & DeLuca. Over time, he built a broad portfolio that included Oakville Grocery, Press Restaurant, Edge Hill Estate, Covenant Wines and Distillery No. 209.

His daughter Samantha Rudd assumed leadership of the winery in 2016. After the sale, she will continue to run  Press Restaurant, a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner. The portfolio also includes Under-Study, a culinary marketplace and café that debuted next door in 2025, alongside chef-partner Philip Tessier.

St. Supéry intends to maintain Rudd Estate and Crossroads as independent brands, preserving the legacy established by the Rudd family. To ensure continuity in quality and operations, winemaker Natalie Bath and managing director Oscar Henquet will remain in their current leadership roles.
