Overholt Digs Deep Into Pennsylvanian Monongahela Roots Reviving Traditional Rye Style

Old Overholt remains as one of the most iconic heritage Rye whiskies of the US, having been established by Abraham Overholt in West Overton, Pennsylvania, in 1810.

That's why when Beam Suntory acquired the brand in 1987, it has continuously been committed to preserving the brand's Pennsylvania roots. Beam Suntory has grown the Overholt brand in recent years by increasing the core Old Overholt expression's age and proof, as well as making it non-chill filtered, and also having brought back the Bonded Old Overholt expression. By partnering with the West Overton museum, Beam Suntory has sought to tap onto the brand's long history to produce a new A Overholt expression - a Straight Rye made with an 80% Rye and 20% Malted Barley mashbill, which is consistent with the Monongahela-style produced by Abraham Overholt over two centuries ago.

The whiskey is today made in Kentucky, and its making has been overseen by Freddie Noe, eighth-generation master distiller at Jim Beam's James B. Beam Distilling Co, which works to create more experimental and small batch expressions.

The new A Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey expression is bottled at 47.5% ABV, and priced at US$40, and will be available across the US in April 2024, featuring notes of "caramel, sandalwood, and caraway on the nose, with brown butter, honeysuckle and clove on the palate".
