This is the second bottle of the Tsuki Hyakushi series (100 Aspects of the Moon), following the first release of the series, a 31 Year Old Uitvlugt rum.
The series will be combining craft rums and single malt whiskies, paying tribute to Tsuki Hyakushi, one of the great innovative and creative geniuses of the 19th century.
The Tsuki Hyakushi series is a result of cooperation of two parties: Precious Liquors and Mr Stefan Van Eycken,.
The Diamond 2001 rum was bottled in 2023, having been distilled in Port Mourant pot stills, bottled at 45.2% ABV.
Tasting Notes from Stefan van Eycken
Aroma
Bold and brash, this exceptional rum is not for the faint-of-heart. The nose opens with a dizzying assemblage of engine oil, newly laid tarmac, black olive tapenade (with capers and a bit more anchovy than usual), pickle brine, salt-pickled oak (kashiwa) leaves and heaps of m-Cresol (think: bandages and tar), but beneath this gruff exterior, you may find lovely hints of amaretto, pine scent, pineapple tarts and annin dofu (almond jelly).
Taste
On the palate, this rum pulls you in an unexpected direction. In fact, it is reminiscent of a long-aged Karuizawa (and at a fraction of the price!), particularly in the way it develops on concentrated fruit – here: stewed apricots, rhubarb jam and umeshu-soaked plums – surrounded by a sustained sudachi halo. There are “dirtier”, earthier notes here, too, so explore to your heart’s content!
Finish
The finish is long and intense, with a piercing citrus top note (lime zest and candied lemon peel) very slowly giving way to a sweet, syrupy base(or“bass”, if you like) note, but syrups with a funk, like kuromitsu and kithul syrup.
This is a real explorer’s dram. Enjoy the journey!
The Diamond 2001 expression will be priced 370 EUR or 550 SGD pre-shipping.
Tortuga 3 Caroni 24 Year Old, Mizunara Long Finish / Jointly Bottled with East Asia Whisky Company
The Tortuga No. 3 reimagines Caroni by giving the now defunct distillery an oriental twist.
As the first ever Caroni to be finished for nearly 2 years in rare Mizunara Oak from Hokkaido, it merges the flavours of the Caribbean with those of the Far East, taking conservation to a truly global scale.
The Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC), founded in 1959 to save sea turtles from imminent extinction, carries out global programmes to conserve and recover sea turtle populations through research, advocacy, and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend.
The Caroni Tortuga Edition No. 3 supports this cause by raising awareness for the Conservancy's endeavors and enabling consumers to directly contribute to sea turtle conservation through a bottle of the Tortuga No. 3.
The Tortuga Series was created & designed by East Asia Whisky Company. The spirit was selected & bottled by Precious Liquors as part of this collaboration.
Official Tasting Note
Aroma
Firm tobacco, herbs and leather are romancing with honey infused chocolate with a touch of acrylic notes. This rum is not a sweet and fruity but shows us some liquorice and sandalwood sweet spiciness. Here it comes some Mizunara!
Taste
Very mature and round mouth feel. Obvious spiciness and Cointreau, zesty note, then again, more to the herbal side. Jasmine green tea follows to leave a slightly perfumed menthol like sensation.
Finish
The final music note playing with the palate is a touch of sandalwood and very soft and pleasant tea like tannins but acrylic Caroni profile stays with us as well.
The Tortuga No. 3 will be priced at 850 EUR or 1,850 SGD.
According to Precious Liquors, the Foursquare Broken Trident expression will be delivered in end June 2023, while the Diamond 2001 and Caroni Tortuga No. 3 will be delivered in end Jul ay 2023.
