Springbank Sherry Series Kicks Off With 10 Year Old Sherry Wood PX Cask Matured

After a very successful multi-year revival of a popular series - the Local Barley, Springbank teased us last year with their upcoming new series - the Springbank Sherry Series.

It looks like the first one to kick it off is here - the 10 Year Old Sherry Wood Pedro Ximenez (PX) Cask Matured Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Right now, we've only got labels from the TTB, but we gather from it that the total outturn will be 10,800 bottles, distilled in July 2012 and due to be bottled come October 2022, bottled at 55% ABV. We're also informed that the whisky was matured for 7 years in refill bourbon barrels followed by 3 years in fresh PX Hogshead made from Spanish oak, making up the full 10 years.

Update:

The first release in a five part series, this 10-year-old single malt from Springbank was initially matured for seven years in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished for three years in first-fill Pedro Ximenez hogsheads.

Aromas of date syrup, raisins, sherry-soaked fruit, walnuts and oaky vanilla fill the nose, complemented by notes of cola cubes, cherry, cinnamon, caramel, mint, damp earth and oil nuts throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.

We did a full brief on all we know about the upcoming Sherry Series from Springbank here. And right on cue the PX is first out the door with no surprises there, and in 2023 we can probably expect the 10 Year Old Palo Cortado Sherry Wood Springbank, and so forth.

Our Take

Springbank has never been hotter, bottles are flying off the shelf, prices are multiplying exponentially, even core releases that were once fairly easy to get hands on. One has to wonder where this is headed... and for those grabbing it hand over fist, I just want to know, what's the gameplan? Are you preparing for some sort of galactic event in which only Springbank's are accepted as currency? Or like what is it? I'm so curious.

Regardless, I'm personally a huge fan, the core 12 Year Cask Strength and the 15 Year Old Rum Wood have been big favorites of mine. More recently, Hazelburn, which is also produced by Springbank, although the brand itself was acquired by Springbank sometime ago, has also been getting quite a fair bit of traction. So I wouldn't be opposed to trying this. Will I get the chance to? That's probably alot more the issue isn't it? You can bet those 10,800 bottles will fly off websites, so if you do manage to chance upon one, don't snooze!

Kanpai!
