Seychelle's Takamaka rum is adding one more to its Le Clos series - a blend of 100% unaged local sugarcane rum, named Napa Laz.
Napa Laz is made 100% of non-hybrid sugarcane varieties harvested from around Takamaka's Trois Freres Distillery. The rum is first distilled in a 1,000-litre still, after which it passes through a second 450-litre still, which allows for more refinement in the distillation process through the use of adjustable copper columns on the smaller stills. The pair of stills were newly added to the distillery last year. Takamaka has also worked to more closely control fermentation temperatures and have experimented with distilling the wash with all its natural yeast remnants.
16.5% of the Napa Laz rum blend comes from the heart of the distillate, with the heads and tails from the 2022 and 2023 harvest redistilled to create what Takamaka calls the "third heart". Following the ethos of the Le Clos range, the Napa Laz expression is bottled free from additives and added sugar, with no charcoal or chill-filtering.
The new Takamaka Napa Laz is bottled at 53.4% ABV, cut down using the distillery's spring water source, with just a total of 408 bottles made available to Europe from September 2024.
