Talisker Launches the Talisker Magma, a 47 Year Old Single Malt Inspired by Skye's Volcanic Past

Talisker has unveiled Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old, a rare single malt that pays homage to the ancient volcanic origins of the Isle of Skye. At 48.8% ABV and $5,250 per 700 ml bottle, it also stands as the oldest expression the 196-year-old distillery has ever released.
The whisky was first matured in refill American oak hogsheads before being finished for four months in specially toasted new American oak casks.
The cask toasting process for this expression used intensely heated volcanic rocks sourced from the Isle of Skye to toast new American oak casks.
In a departure from traditional open-flame methods, this process utilizes heated rocks that rotate within the barrels to toast their interiors, without direct stave contact. Traditional barrel toasting - particularly charring - typically involves directing fire through open casks, but the flameless volcanic approach here is designed to coax fruitier, more mineral-driven characteristics from the wood while allowing Talisker's gently peated spirit to remain front and center. By incorporating steam throughout, the casks remain hydrated while maintaining a precise, controlled temperature for a more consistent finish.
Talisker's master blender Greg Bruce has noted that using volcanic rock–toasted casks allowed for a more deliberate and measured finishing process — one that draws out a different balance of fruit, minerality, and texture while preserving the distillery's hallmark coastal character and subtle smokiness.
This technique was first revealed with the launch of Talisker Molten Seas, but is now said to reach its fullest expression in this release.

The expression is said to have notes of:
Nose: A mellow nose with a gentle hint of Talisker chili-pepper. The initial impression is distinctly mineral and maritime, led by wet rocks, dry edible seaweed and salt crystals backed by sweet notes of Scottish toffee, then scented sandalwood with a trace of hessian.
Later, a very faint smoky note suggests a bonfire in the background which increases with the addition of water.
Taste: A creamy-smooth, silky texture introduces an unusually mineral, intense and lightly sweet initial taste, with the mineral note becoming a familiar pinch of salt that joins with notes of sweet Scottish toffee mid-palate to herald the rise of an elemental spicy warmth.
The classic chili ‘catch’ at the back is smoother, yet still there. Water is not needed, but if added reduces the expression's intensity and raises its mineral notes.
Finish: Long and spicy but also with mouth-cooling notes of Sichuan chili-pepper and a long, warming aftertaste.
The expression is presented in a sculptural bottle that aims to mirror the meeting of sea and volcanic rock, reflecting the dramatic landscape of Skye itself.
Crafted from 100% recycled glass with a gradient fade from clear to black, it hopes to evoke ocean depths and molten stone, while a hand-sculpted glass stopper inspired by volcanic obsidian ensures each bottle is subtly unique. Because each glass enclosure is individually sculpted, every one of the 622 bottles carries a slightly different visual character on the shelf.
With only 622 bottles made, the Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old will be released in extremely limited quantities via Diageo's private client teams and in highly select luxury retailers in the UK, select European and APAC countries, and the US and Global Travel Retail, with a recommended price of $5,250.
For those curious about what Talisker's volcanic toasting technique brings to a younger and far more accessible whisky, the distillery released the 14-year-old Molten Seas last year as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases collection.
