If there were a "releasing products not quite in their industry" competition, Tesla would be a pretty good contender in the running.
From a carbon fiber surfboard to a cybertruck-shaped whistle, the new Tesla Mezcal is surely one of their less bizarre releases in recent times.
Tesla's Gigabier
This isn't the first time the automotive and clean energy company has dabbled into the world of alcohol too, with polarising previous releases of Tesla Tequila and beer "Gigabier" (Made with cyberhops, whatever that is).
Tesla announced the Mezcal in a surprise release last Thursday (June 6) on X. Clad in a glossy black outer shell, the bottle is a callback to the lightning-bolt shape design of 2020's Tesla Tequila.
The price at USD$450 is also just a little more expensive than the previous Tesla Tequila re-release, which retailed at $420.
Not a lot is known about how it tastes, unfortunately, except that it's distilled from a combination of Agave Espadin and Bicuishe. It's also said to have the smoky flavors of green apple, spice and chamomile.
The mezcal traces its inspiration back to 2018 when Musk teased fans with an improbable “Teslaquilla” as part of an April Fool’s joke.
Except it wasn't entirely a joke, and Musk eventually partnered with distiller Nosotros Tequila to roll out an añejo famously dubbed Tesla Tequila. They are also responsible for Tesla Mezcal.
Let's just hope it gets a better review than Musk's Gigabier, which was dubbed the "world's worst beer" by X users.
