Nestled in the vibrant, heritage-rich neighbourhood of Keong Saik Road, the iconic venue formerly known as Potato Head Singapore has stepped into a new era as 1939. Built in, you guessed it, the year 1939, this Art Deco building which Potato Head Singapore has long called home has been a fixture of Chinatown. Now, 1939 merges this storied past with a modern vision focused on culture, creativity, and conscious hospitality, celebrating the building’s Art Deco origins and acknowledging the heritage and history that have shaped the venue.
Leading this transformation is Seng-Hoo Ong, Chief Strategic Officer and Managing Partner of Potato Head Family who wishes to position 1939 as a beacon of creativity and culture in Singapore’s hospitality scene. This refresh represents a new chapter with dishes and drinks offerings that pay homage to Singapore’s Chinatown heritage while incorporating international staples.
Spread across four floors of this heritage shophouse, 1939 offers a diverse experience. The Front Porch on Level 1 preserves the vibrant legacy of Tong Ah Eating House, blending heritage with modern twists. Level 2, The Restaurant, is decorated with hand-painted murals and vibrant decor by Australian artist David Bromley.
Warm lighting and an intimate atmosphere set the stage for a reimagined menu embracing global culinary influences. Signature dishes include Har Cheong Gai, Lamb Rack, and the Chilli Crab Burger, highlighting premium, regionally sourced ingredients. And for those who loved the old Potato Head, a selection of Three Buns Burgers remains on offer.
For those seeking a bit more intimacy, Level 3 houses the speakeasy-style Studio 1939 Cocktail Bar, featuring deep hues and rich textures for a cosy yet sophisticated atmosphere. The drinks programme comes with a unique BPM-themed cocktail list that blends mixology with music. Apparently, each drink is designed to serve as both refreshment and auditory experience, complementing the culinary direction. Level 4, the Rooftop Bar, offers distinct tropical-inspired cocktails and laidback vibes.
If you're looking for a bit of a party, Studio 1939 hosts high-energy DJ performances on weekends, while the Rooftop provides a relaxed setting for socialising under the stars.
All in all, 1939 sounds like it has something for everyone, whether you're a foodie, a cocktail enthusiast, or just looking for a cool spot to soak up the Keong Saik vibe.
