I was making my current obsession in the form of the *Après Le Monde, Le Gris* yesterday when I discovered to my horror I was nearly out of WT101. Necessity being the mother of invention, I improvised this variant on the fly.
- 1.5 parts bonded/100+ proof bourbon (I of course use and recommend Wild Turkey 101)
- 1 part Appleton Estate 12 Jamaican rum
- 1/2 part Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum
- 1.5 parts fresh/hand squeezed orange juice
- 1 part simple syrup
- 1 egg white
Combine all ingredients in shaker, shake dry and violently. Add ice to shaker, shake again with prejudice. Strain and pour over cocktail ice.
The perfect Après Le Monde, Le Gris — variant version.
Or alternatively, the perfect Mother of Invention.
The exchange of higher proof bourbon for the Appleton 12 takes this in a sweeter, funkier direction than the original Après Le Monde, Le Gris recipe, but the bones of the original are here. If the original take was essentially a slightly funky whiskey sour, then this drink is basically a tiki version of a whiskey sour. It almost veers into Mai Tai/Halekulani territory in terms of sweetness married to citrus that’s also having a side fling with raw alcohol firepower. I think if you worked in some pineapple or lime juice, you’re just straight up in tiki territory. That all said, if you like a slightly sweeter cocktail that still ardently pays homage to the whiskey sour, I’d give this a shot.
