Blended 40 Year Old, The Whiskyfind, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sherry casks, 888 bottles, 44.5% abv.
Supposedly distilled in 1977 and bottled in 2017. Aged in sherry casks. Not much information on this one, other than at the time it was somewhat well distributed in Japan.
Nose: moderate sherry, quite toasty, remnants of dried fruit, nuts, after some time I get lemons and grapes.
Palate: strange, initial palate is very sour, mid palate has some oil on it but still sour, earthy, dirty gravel, similar to newly mixed asphalt, back palate has sherry residue but also earthy undertones. Quite unstable, switches between a light sherry and newly mixed asphalt. Not digging this.
Finish: long, a little dry, slightly spicey, a bit of wet old steamed lotus leaves, those old purple otter popsicles (grape concentrate?), major sour grapes.
This is a newly opened bottle so it might be a little biased. The nose is basically fruits and toast, the body is too sour, and a pickled taste overtakes the first sip. I swear this reminds me of newly made asphalt mix. So I have to wait several months for it to open up? The good thing is that that flavors are strong, impactful, bold, but can't say the overall experience was good. The sourness is hard for me to overcome, but I can see if someone grew up on sour power, extremely picked vegetables, and chilli picante cornnuts, they might be able to taste the underlying dark fruits and sherry. I gotta say, The Whiskyfind seems somewhat amateurish at picking bottles in their middle 2016-2018 era, but the labels are great. Seem to be going for the economical play as opposed to the expensive quality play. Is there something in the Taiwan air?
