Bruichladdich 8, 2003, Limited Edition, Micro-Provenance Series, Original Cask Bourbon, Cask Evolution Chateau D'yquem Cask No. 231, 46% abv.

The goal of the Micro Provenance series is to find the difference between the maturation in different casks and climates. Therefore each bottling is a single cask chosen by Master distiller Jim McEwan. In this case, the juice has been influenced by a barrel from one of the great Chateaus.

Nose: milk cheese, wood, strawberries, pomegranate, very sweet and a little fruity. Is this an appetizer platter at an Italian or French restaurant?

Palate: weak body, flavors disappear pretty quickly, mellow wood, a little earthy, maybe some tree leaves. Guess that age is showing up.

Finish: moderate to long, slight sour wood mouth coat. Also has a light bitter aftertaste similar to bad coffee.

Wow, that nose is like an entry level fruit and cheese plate... which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you think of cheese. Other than that, there isn't anything going on.  It's pretty disappointing as the flavors didn't present themselves and didn't distinguish themselves from entry level scotches.

Grade: C
