Double Barrel, Mortlach & Laphroaig, Douglas Laing, 46% abv.
Nose: smoke and apples, salted caramel, salty, back aromas of wood.
Palate: initial palate is like a seaweed sweetness, cut apples, mid palate has smoke similar to dying coals sprayed with water develop, spice also builds up, back palate is an Islay flavor profile, peat smoke. With time, it converges to a lighter version normal Islay mafia malt.
Finish: short, peaty, a light warm menthol, spicey.
This two cask blend seems to resemble more a mellowed Laphroaig than anything else. The nose was sweeter than it should be, perhaps the contribution from Mortlach, but it resembles a lighter version of those Laphroaig 12 to 21 OB releases. Lacks ooomph.
