GlenDronach 15, Tawny Port Finish, 46% abv.
This GlenDronach was first matured in European oak for 13 years and then about 2 years in Tawny Port barrels.
Nose: well bodied, meaty, heavy stewed prune and pork juice, oak, baked fruit jam, fortified red wine, a sour smoke backdrop,
Palate: a little dry, initial palate is heavy fruit and wood but not much is going on, mid palate has the fruit jam develop quite intensely, espresso?, rum feeling and flavors, back palate has alot of fruit jam, wet old steamed lotus leaves, wood, and a sour smoke. However, the whole tasting experience diminishes significantly with each sip. I guess it doesn't have the body for it... started off soooo well too.
Finish: moderate, a sour wood juice, evolves into dull wood, hints of pre-wet old steamed lotus leaves.
Haha, I gotta admit, I like this one. Never would have guessed its a GD. Initially full flavors, alot of stewed fruits and baked fruit jam. Reminds me of a less intense Aberlour A'bunadh or a rum. However, with each sip the intensity significantly diminished. The mid palate was strong, but then took a back seat to the back palate. I attribute this behavior to a weak body. I'm interested in the GD single port casked now.
Grade: C+
