Glengoyne 18, 43% abv.

Glengoyne 18, 43% abv.

Launched in 2012 to replace the 17, matured in refill sherry and first-fill sherry casks.

Nose: soft but has body, honey, cherry juice, cold baked apples, peach or apricot seed, prunes come later.

Palate: moderate body, initial palate is a little sweet, mid palate has light bitterness, like walnut shells, white bread crust, back palate has some vegetative aspects, small leaves actually, a little bitter. Later on there is some wet old steamed lotus leaves.

Finish: short, walnuts and brazilian nuts, light coffee, hints of pineapples after brushing your teeth with Colgate.

Couldn't tell there was a lot of sherry involved in the production process, perhaps not quality sherried casks. Seemed more like a standard malt, almost Cardhu-like. Wasn't too crazy about the finish and overall it seemed a little rough. A few tweaks here and there and it could have been a pretty good Scotch.

Grade: C
