Glenturret 1966-1993, 80 proof but 45.7% abv.
The proof-abv is based on some sort of old UK rule involving the division of proof by 1.75 would be the abv, i.e. 80 proof/1.75 = 45.7% abv. Not sure where that number came from and apparently it has changed over the years. Back in the British Empire days (and before), proof was just used as a term for taxing purposes. 100 proof was about 57.15% abv.... based on rum! However, modern times have just relegated themselves to using alcohol by volume instead, with proofing following the US system.
Nose: great body, strong chocolate, honey, green apples, starts off a little fruity and then some fresh herbs, slightly vegetative.
Palate: dry, strong, initial and mid palate is very sweet, spice builds up, back palate has strong caramel, white chocolate, taffee, later on it becomes herbal with some old tea leaves in there.
Finish: medium, abv heat, milk chocolate mouthfeel now, after a few sips its a little minty.
This is a real sweet, honey and chocolate based whisky that is similar to some of the current releases. Very heavy, a variety of sweetness, with the most interesting part being the back end, where I got mint, herbs, and tea leaves. Maybe given more time, this juice would transform into a totally different dram something akin to mint tea with honey. Excellent juice.
