Owner of Bar Augusta says Paul Rusch has a portion of 1986 Hakushu, while this is 100% 1987 Hakushu.

Nose: like sweet perfume, moderate vanilla that takes some time, and effort, to come out/extract.

Palate: well bodied, smooth, initial palate is a little heavy on white sugar, light on flavors, mid palate has some wood and vegetables, mostly cooked green meaty vegetables, back palate has vines, vegetables, ruby grapefruit, good amount of smoked vanilla.

Finish: medium to long, warm vanilla ice cream, some old coffee in there, with time the vanilla aspects coat the tongue.

Wow, the back palate is where everything is at. The nose was a little light, I really had to suck in alot of air just to get the aromas. Juice didn't really taste like much until it hit the back and then a variety of sensations revealed themselves, mostly around a smoked vanilla flavor. There are a variety of accompanying flavors and many of them are out front, but the grapefruit and smoked vanilla is dominant and definitely the most enjoyable. For a high abv shot, it definitely doesn't feel like it, very smooth.

Grade: B-
