This was an Italian import Laphroaig 15 OB I got in a bottle split. The tax stamp dates this to the 1990s. The pre-Royal Warrant label narrows this down to 1990-1993. Which means the distillate is anywhere from 1975-1978. The date puts it just after the legendary Cinzano imports of the 80s, which cost 4 times of this bottle at current prices.
Nose: Eucalyptus, vanilla, freesia, blackberry, pears, lavender, a touch of brine. Creamy, floral and fruity all at once.
Palate: Intensely sweet but light yet not wispy; green apples, plums, honey, castor sugar, pecans.
Finish: Medium-long, watermelon rind, camphor, blueberries.
Score: 90
The most delicate and elegant Laphroaig I've ever tried. Of course one could hope for higher ABV but this does a lot with 43% with the soft fruits and florals that set it apart from more recent, younger Laphroaigs.
