Laphroaig 18, Douglas Laing Extra Old Particular, XOP, 198/323, 56.8% abv
From the higher quality, premium version of the Old Particular line from Douglas Laing.
Nose: smoke, peaty, wood, light salt, a more controlled Islay malt.
Palate: smooth, full bodied, initial and mid palates are very sweet, body of a typical young Laphroaig, but then the back palate shows super smoke, peat, at a level much higher than the typical 18 year. No salt, no fruit.
Finish: moderate, Islay like, smoke, peat, but no salt this time.
This is an excellent single cask by XOP! It showcases the powerful peated smoke that can develop over 18 years, and doesn't show detractions at all. It's focused, straightforward, and simple. I am also biased towards the Islay mafia.
