Octomore 6.1, 5 years, b.2014, 167 ppm, 57% abv.
Bruichladdich's offshoot series, Octomore is super heavily peated goodness. Decided to end my Austin trip with a strong recommendation from the bartender. I enjoyed the whisky and bourbon scene in Austin. The people were friendly and the food was great... that line at Franklin's though... crazy.
Nose: major smoked bbq, a lot of peat, wood.
Palate: smooth and sweet, initial palate is smoke? mid palate is sweet american bbq, back palate is peaty, amerixan bbq.
Finish: dry, smokey, becomes major wood and bbq.
The nose is amazing!!!!! Like bbq and smoke combined! It's a very flavorful dram, But if you don't like the peaty and smokey range, then this is not for you. Extreme bbq and smoke. Octomores, at least in my book, are quite unique and are definitely not for everyone. Because of this, I think they usually get dismissed as specialty drinks, one trick ponies, or one-hit-wonders so to speak... which all may be true, but the experience is something.
