Peregrine Rock 10, California Pure Single Malt, Saint James Spirits, 60% abv.
California whisky, peated, supposedly for the Japanese market only, but reports say it was widely distributed in the US before the "distillery" closed down. Peregrine Rock is the child of a Mr. James Busuttil, who was/is a high school biology teacher that distilled/ created alcoholic products on the side such as "tequila" and brandy. This California whisky was distilled using peated Highland Scottish barley and "mountain spring water", but apparently in an interview he suggested the water used to make Peregeine Rock was from the tap and a local market because of what he witnessed as whisky water sources in Scotland.
Nose: smokey, major vanilla, very nice.
Palate: medium to full body, initial and mid palate is major vanilla, good amount of smoke, bbq, back palate is sour, maybe dry. Reminds me of a Port Ellen without the sweet aspects.
Finish: short to medium, citrus elements.
Surprisingly good! It's simple and to the point, just two flavors of smoke and sweet vanilla. Gotta say its better than the Laphy 11 I just had, was closer to a Port Ellen, or what I think Port Ellen is, where the sweetness and smoke are separate but meshed. I never knew California could distill a whisky this good. Thought it was interesting a reviewer said it was soapy... maybe I'm drunk already?
