Scallywag 13, Douglas Laing, Speyside Blended Malt, 46% abv.
Scallywag is the Speyside component in the Remarkable Regional Malts series from Douglas Laing. Supposedly the blend includes Mortlach, Macallan, Inchgower, Dailuaine, and Glenrothes. I couldn't get confirmation, but I would assume this version has the same small batch Scallywag blend compnents that have matured for at least 13 years.
Nose: ginger, light grapes, wax, light sherry notes.
Palate: quite sweet, caramel, pudding, brown sugar, abv spice, light to well bodied. A few drops of water brings out and emphasizes the sweetness and some old steamed lotus leaves.
Finish: moderate, warming, caramelized sugar. A few drops of water makes the finish more hot.
This feels like a light sherry cask finished malt. Nothing complex. The palate and finish are very good for such a young whisky, warm and not too sweet. Unfortunately the nose was too light. A very good daily drinker. I seem to prefer Scallywag and Rock Oystet over Timorous Beastie and Epicurean. Had this at Slainte mhath bar in Busan, South Korea.
