Scallywag Small Batch Release, Douglas Laing, 46% abv.

Scallywag is the Speyside component in the Remarkable Regional Malts series from Douglas Laing. Supposedly the blend includes Mortlach, Macallan, Inchgower, Dailuaine, and Glenrothes, with  many of these whiskies (~40%?) having been matured in Spanish ex-Sherry Butts, along with standard ex-bourbon casks.

Nose: fresh white bread, malt, light grapes, very light hint of smoke in the background. Weak body.

Palate: initial and mid palate is light standard wood juice, sour bread, nothing special, but the back palate has some wood, light smoke, smoked wood.

Finish: moderate, a little dry, coffee rinds, mostly boiled peanuts dominate.

Probably one of the better blends in Douglas Laing's Remarkable Malts range. Loses body quote quickly though. Everything is a little normal, but the back palate and finish detract from the "normal" profile. For a blend, the boiled peanuts finish is quite different. Had this at Bar Viva La Vida, Seoul, South Korea.

Grade: C
