Strathisla 10 years, ~early 1960s?, 75 ctl, 43% abv.
Strathisla is known more for being a blend in Chivas Regal products than being one of the oldest continuous distilleries in Scotland. The history of the distillery is quite interesting. Strathisla supposedly had several name changes, back and forth to Milton/Miltown distillery. Milton was purchased by a bad apple around 1940 and was acquired by Chivas, who changed the name back to Strathisla. Even more interesting is the geography of Strathisla, but that is a story for another time.
Nose: major soaked japanese mushrooms but in a mellow bad way, salty, wheat, rye, light notes of young tofu. Really strange.
Palate: General sweetness, honeycombs, just plain honey sweetness, which is a little shocking since the nose went in a completely different direction. Feels like a grain.
Finish: short to medium, honey.
The nose is a very strange one, but the taste and finish is quite sweet. I can feel a void developed in the body of flavor, but I don't know what should have been there. Maybe storage care has degraded some aspects. A few drops of water didn't do anything. Not sure what to think of it and I don't think there was significant OBE. It was like poorly scented honey... makes me wonder. Had this at Macallan Whisky Bar and Lounge, Macau.
