Tomatin 39, 1976-2015, The Whisky Hoop, Cask no. 31, 084/190, 47% abv.
This was taken as a mystery shot. Only got more details after notes and grades. Additional information was researched afterwards at home as well.
The Whisky Hoop is sort of a Japanese IB-er, having derived it's name from the iron hoops that keep the barrels/casks whiskies are aged in. Definitely more oriented/targeting the Japanese consumer.
Nose: light noticeable peaches, slightly fruity, backend of toast.
Palate: sweet and lightly sharp, some abv burn, initial palate is a little sharp, mid palate has fruits, roots, a little earthy, meaty, back palate has peaches coming up.
Finish: medium, tree roots, slight wet old lotus leaves... but now when I exhale, its all peach jelly.
Bartender tried to show me another peach bomb, but admittedly it was not as explosive and obvious as the Teeling. The peach on this one is late, requires significant air time, and shows up late in the tasting first revealing itself on the back palate and more mature in the finish. Perhaps the previous Teeling 21 vintage reserve affected this pour?
Grade: B
