Yoichi 20 Year Old, d.1989, 55% abv.

Not a part of the decades lineup, but those barrels from a single vintage. Has this at the end of 2019.

Nose: grapes, raisins, turns to vanilla and graham, butter pastries, apples, similar to a well made light sherry cask (i.e. some Macallans, Glendronachs, Benriachs), but there are noticeably more aromas, some bbq pork on deeper inhalations.

Palate: light body, initial palate is a diluted grape juice, quite sweet though, mid palate shows a sort of peppercorn mix in the malt and grape juice, quite confusing, a few smoked elements/peaty, ends up being a peated honey but not too intense, back palate is slightly metallic with iron, some salted vegetables, soy, caramel.

Finish: a sort of sour malt with black pepper sprinkled into it, grape juice, the initial caramel sweetness disappears. I couldn't sense it at first, but there is a good amount of peat on the retroactive olfaction.

This was a little weird. The nose was great, but the flavors that followed were a little unexpected. The smokey peat elements were very light for me, and those malt and vegetables were distracting. In the end, it was quite sweet and even though I couldn't sense it directly , the peat smoke demonstrated evidence that it was there.
