Nose - Nuts, sawdust, sweet syrup and spice, candlewax, a lit candle, light citrus fruits, mamon? (sponge cake)
Palate - Sharp! Pepper, hazelnuts, honey, nuts, spicy ginger, clove and tart cherries, the electric spiciness keeps attacking with a little alcohol burn, but there are layers of waxy earth and wood
Finish - Cashew nuts, raisins, prunes and dried apricots, more unsalted cashew nuts
Feels electric!
This is not a 105 year old whisky. I just thought we had to make that clear. “105” actually refers to the alcohol content of the whisky in British proof, which equates to 60% abv.
This is one of the best budget cask strength whiskies around at P2,500 (USD50) for a 1 liter bottle on a good day. And it could actually one of the first commercially marketed cask strength whiskies when it was first released in 1968.
I would call it a sherry bomb with its old sweet dried fruits and nuts and spices taking center stage. And the high abv makes this drink absolutely electric. For me this is one of the few whiskies that I don’t mind adding a few drops of water to every time I drink it. It does take water very well. A few drops give you fresher sweet fruits on the nose and a bit of a woodier, more reserved palate with some spices in the background.
A pretty good nightcap at the end of a long day. Excellent bang for your buck, and quite accessible, it’s often available online at Boozy, Liquor.ph and Singlemalt.ph.
