#whiskyPhDram No. 27. Laphroaig 10yo. Musty Towels and Band-Aids. Peated Islay Single Malt Scotch.

Nose - There’s a musty towel and tinapa (smoked fish) in the background that grows in intensity. Sweet cinnamon and ripe red apples, earthy grains and baked bread.

Palate - A splash of cool water mid tongue, then smoke ignites the palate. Some leather, apple stewed in cinnamon, crunchy crispy dilis (anchovies) with spice coming later. Vanilla and oak linger with smoke escaping on the sides.

Finish - smoked ribs, betadine and band-aids. A rich delightful finish that is short and fades quickly followed by longer memories of plain bitter oak, lingering smoke, a hint of crispy dilis and tobacco leaves.

Feels like trying crunchy fish snacks from the local sari-sari store.

The 10yo is Laphroaig’s flagship offering. It’s aged in ex-bourbon casks and peated at about 40-50ppm. However, it is chill-filtered and appears to use e150 caramel coloring.

In terms of complexity, it’s not that complex. There are interesting notes to pick up on but the experience pretty much stays the same as you enjoy it. But don’t let that fool you. This is a really good, tasty and powerful dram.

With its thick, smoky, salty, pungent, iodine and medicinal (band-aids/betadine) character, the #Laphroaig approach to #islay peat really allows you to explore this flavor profile. But maybe not everyone will be pleased to drink musty towels, especially at first! For most it’s an acquired taste.

Unlike the Ardbegs and Lagavulins which have started popping up in grocery stores, Laphroaigs are a bit harder to find. And since the quarter cask is more popular in the 🇵🇭, the 10yo is even harder to come by. It is occasionally available for around P2,200-P2,800 (44-56USD). Sláinte!
