[#whiskyPhFocus] Chivas Regal.
Chivas Regal (Chivas) is one of those few brands that do tend to regularly make it to ordinary groceries and supermarkets in the Philippines, along with Johnnie Walker and Jack Daniels.
Chivas is a brand of blended scotch whiskies which traces its heritage to 1801 with two grocers, the brothers James and John Chivas. These guys were real whisky fans. They started blending the whisky stocks they could get their hands on for their customers. It was a successful business. But it wasn’t called “Chivas Regal” until 1909 they launched, a 25 year old blend-the oldest of the era, befitting of its regal name. It was the first global luxury blended whisky and the brand’s reputation has only grown since.
It’s believed that the standard Chivas blends single malts from #Strathisla, #Longmorn, #Glenlivet, #Allt-a-Bhainne, #Miltonduff and #Braeval.
So what is it like? I’ve so far tried the 12yo, 15yo, the Ultis and the Mizunara Finished bottles. The taste depends on which one you’re trying but what’s common is that this is a very accessible drink even for non whisky drinkers. If you give this to one, it will meet their expectations when you say you’re handing them a scotch. There’s the sweet fruits and wood, with just a tinge of smokiness in the background. They make really good bottles for sharing with friends.
