The Toronto
2 oz Rye Whiskey (I like to blend Bulleit Whiskey 95 Rye and Heaven Hill Rittenhouse Rye)
1/4 oz Fernet Branca
1/4 oz Rosemary Simple Syrup
2 drops Angostura bitters
Stir, strain into a coup or cocktail. garnish with a lemon or orange twist.
It's a toss up between this and the rob roy for my favorite variation of the Manhattan. The sharp spice of rye whiskey is a great base, but I've heard that some prefer Canadian whiskey, which would better fit the name of the cocktail. The fernet adds a herbal bitterness that is softened by the simple syrup.
Normally the drink calls for plain simple but I had the Rosemary simple left over from making the Smoked Rose and didn't feel like making more simple. The Rosemary got buried under the fernet but it still had the desired effect of sweetening the drink.
