Macallan Pays Homage To Transatlantic Journeys Of Oak Casks With 1987 Carta Nautica

Before the likes of animation themed cruises and celebrity super yachts, there was the exhilaration of transatlantic travel aboard a sailing ships and galleons, with new lands awaiting!

And it was precisely these sorts of voyages that Sherry casks would have to take for them to be transported from Spain, where the fortified wine was made, all the way to Scotland, so that they could be used to age Scotch whiskies.

Reminiscing those days, Macallan is teasing a new release titled Macallan 1987 Carta Nautica!

The Macallan has created a bottling inspired by the epic transatlantic journeys of its oak undertaken since 1824. This whisky started its maturation in the finest oak casks seasoned by sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, before being moved to casks that previously held bourbon from America to complete its journey.

Of entirely natural colour, the whisky sends the nose to different lands with tropical pineapple, creamy vanilla and a touch of rose. Antique oak gives way to orange oil and sweet tarte au citron on the palate, culminating in a finish of lingering wood spice and luscious sultanas.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose: Creamy vanilla with caramelised peaches, rich oak alongside tropical pineapple with a touch of rose and pink grapefruit.

Palate: Antique oak with orange oil, berry compote and nectarines. A twist of charred pineapple and leather with sweet tarte au citron.

Finish: Lingering wood spice, tropical fruit and luscious sultana.

With just 600 bottles to be released, the new Macallan 1987 Carta Nautica is due to be bottled at 45.2% ABV.
