Five Farms Irish Cream Liqueur, 17% ABV


Moo-ve over Baileys, there's a new Irish cream liqueur in town. 
 
Five Farms Irish Cream is apparently the world's first ever farm-to-table Irish cream liqueur of it's kind. Farm-to-table basically means that this is an Irish cream liqueur is made from single batches of fresh cream from five different family-owned farms in County Cork, Ireland. The cream is collected from the farmers, and combined with Irish whiskey within 48 hours of collection to ensure maximum freshness.
 
The Secret Behind the Cream? "Happy Cows"
 
According to the brand, the Five Farm's secret is that they use cream produced by "happy cows". At each of the five farms that the brand works with, the cows are allowed to graze outdoors 300 days of the year, where they can soak up the fertile pastures, crisp ocean air and the warming sun in County Cook, Ireland. Fun fact: you can tell a cow is happy when they have what farmers call "happy lines". Read: fat rolls around the cow's ribs.

The cows at the five farms that Five Farms sources their cream from have those happy lines. And the end result is exceptionally smooth, creamy and luxurious batches of cream that goes into the Five Farms recipe.
 
As for the Whisky Used?
 
Five Farms hasn't declared an exact source of the Irish whiskey used in its product, but did indicate that it is indeed a triple-distilled whiskey. This matters because triple distillation actually creates a smoother texture and cleaner taste, and is a popular Irish whiskey production technique that gives Irish whiskey their characteristically friendly taste profiles. The brand does claim that Five Farms Irish Cream contains ten times the average amount of whiskey that an average Irish cream liqueur contains, giving the cream some extra kick.
 
 
Before we dive into the review, I must admit that this bottle first caught by eye mainly because of the packaging. It very aptly comes in a wide-mouthed black glass bottle with a swing-top cap and metal handle that is really reminiscent of those retro milk bottles of the early 1900s. A really pretty conversation starter for sure! 
 

Five Farms Irish Cream Liqueur - Tasting Notes

  
Nose: Light aromas of creme brûlée, caramel and fresh whipped cream.
 
Palate: Really creamy and rich mouthful from the get go. I pick up strong notes of vanilla bean ice cream, caramel flan, and rich honeyed pancakes. On subsequent sips, you might even pick up some very subtle notes of dark chocolate. 
 
Finish: Long. It's on the finish where the intensity the Irish whiskey kicks in - I get deeper notes of spices that builds up, complements the lingering notes of fresh cream and caramel sauce and adding complexity.

Happy cows makes for a very happy me. This was a really indulgent dessert drink. The flavours were intense and sweet, and the overall texture was velvety and luxurious. Somehow, though, it never feels overly cloying or one-dimensional. I've also had it with my morning coffee before, and it makes it taste like a silky, smooth caramel latte with a kick.
