Chichibu's Antipodes Collection Features the 4 Faces of Japanese Artist Aki Kuroda

"In my face, there are many faces... And the world too, has many faces."

– Aki Kuroda

Four bottlings of Chichibu Single Malt from the new Antipodes Collection have been unveiled in La Maison du Whisky's latest creation catalogue – bottled from four different cask styles with very different temperaments.

The Chichibu Antipodes Collection comprises a set of four bottlings, each featuring an artistic self-portrait of Paris-based Japanese artist Aki Kuroda, well known for known for his silhouettes and figures painted with line strokes that resemble a passage through a labyrinth. Each piece of art has been chosen by LMDW to adorn these exclusive Chichibu bottlings.

Aki Kuroda

Kuroda's self portraits illustrate the several different facets of a single persona. The artist recalls the Japanese ancestral tradition of masks while at the same time affirming a very expressive modernity, in a style that verges on abstraction. They reflect an identity that is resolutely contemporary and yet nourished by tradition.

Apart from vibrantly coloured self-portraits on the bottle labels, a second series of self-portraits produced with oil on paper (see page on right) has been chosen to illustrate the labels of the first of each numbered bottle in the range. These four bottles and the original paintings that inspired their labels will be sold at auction and the proceeds donated to an undisclosed philanthropic cause.

Autoportrait V, Autoportrait VI, Autoportrait VII, Autoportrait VIII by Aki Kuroda

“My artworks are always the result of a meeting, a chance encounter, a detail that struck me or a face that inspired me... These self-portraits are in part reminiscences of the Minotaure magazine which I saw as a child in my father’s house, a Surrealist magazine published in Paris in the 1930s. I have been obsessed with the figure of the Minotaur ever since. Its features are mixed with mine. I don’t see anything monstrous in it. It’s simply a game for me to overlay them.

- Aki Kuroda on his artistic inspiration

The Chichibu Antipodes Collection

Just as a single persona could have multiple facets, the Antipodes Collection bottlings demonstrate how Chichibu's knowhow and four unique cask styles can produce very different temperaments of a single creative spirit - one especially surprising cask having previously held a wine made from a Japanese grape variety!

Chichibu 8 YO 2013 Virgin Oak - 61% ABV

Single Cask #2856 - Virgin Oak Barrel (LMDW exclusive)

This 8-year-old Chichibu 8 YO is produced with Concerto barley - distilled in 2013 and matured exclusively in virgin oak. It demonstrates distinguished notes of polish, spices and heady florals, but also a perfect balances of these element on the nose, palate and finish.

This has an outturn of 196 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep burnished gold.

Aroma

Full-bodied, noble.

The absolutely magnificent first nose reveals very distinguished aromas of precious wood, beeswax and dark chocolate. Allowed to breathe, notes of vetiver, heather and lime blossom add intense lyricism to the aroma palette.

Spices then make their entrance (cardamom, saffron, grated ginger, clove). This increase in aromatic power takes place with intense harmony.

Taste

Concentrated, rich.

Staying in unison with the nose, the attack on the palate gives its own rendition of the vetiver, lime blossom, beeswax and saffron notes found in the aroma palette. Allowed to breathe, the mid-palate reveals a minerality that brings to mind pencil lead and slate.

The deliciously praline and roasted (coffee) end of the palate is delicately tannic, fleshy (plum, Corinthian raisin), nobly spicy and infused (tea).

Finish

Long, full.

Carrying on from the palate, the start of the finish invites us to enjoy candied apricot, cocoa powder and grilled walnut. With a beautiful fruity (orange zest, walnut stain) and chocolatey bitterness, the end of the finish unveils notes of curry and black liquorice.

The retro-nasal olfaction is heady (iris butter, elder wood), while the empty glass releases succulent fragrances of coffee, sandalwood and cardamom.

Chichibu 6 YO 2015 Heavily Peated - 63.9% ABV

Previous iterations of peated Chichibu Single Malts introduced fans to ephemeral peat. Now, the Antipodes Collection introduces fans to a heavily peated iteration produced from heavily peated Concerto barley. This is said to immediately plunge drinkers into an intensely earthy, medicinal, marine and malty universe. And yet, the incredibly mature palette of flavours and aromas also reveals numerous fruity, herbaceous, floral and honeyed sequences that not only bring lots of depth but also continually raise the level of the tasting.

This has an outturn of 197 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Bright gold.

Aroma

Refined, complex.

The extremely deep first nose is deliciously medicinal, camphoric, smoky and malty. The scene is set. Allowed to breathe, fragrances of peppermint, green almond and cut hay bring lots of sophistication to the aroma palette. Notes of mimosa and new aromatic plants (savoury, oregano) then gradually take hold.

Taste

Clear, slender.

The delicately fruity and juicy (apple, pear) attack is also deliciously honeyed (acacia). A very refined peat with chocolate and salty tones then gradually gains the upper hand. On the mid-palate, this becomes more herbaceous and mentholated.

The end of the palate invites us to enjoy a delicious agave liqueur and a refreshing herbal tea.

Finish

Long, subtle.

The lemony and floral (iris, lily) start of the finish is also delicately liquoricey and milky (rice cake, frozen yoghurt). At the same time, ripe pears release their juice across the sides of the palate. The bright end of the finish is like a barley field swept with a sea breeze. Rising higher, the retro-nasal olfaction offers a view of a foaming sea.

The deeply malty empty glass recreates the soft and yet grainy texture of artichoke heart.

Chichibu 8 YO 2013 Chichibu Wine Cask - 61% ABV

Single Cask #9664 - Japanese Wine Cask (LMDW Exclusive)

One of the most interesting expressions from the Chichibu catalogue, this is produced from 4 different varieties of barley (Braemar, Concerto, Tipple and Propino) in 2013, then aged in a cask that previously held Japanese wine produced from the Koshu grapes produced by a winery nearby the Chichibu Distillery.

With incredible originality and boldness, right from the start of the tasting, it has no qualms in venturing into the world of gin to take on a deeply invigorating herbaceous freshness. It then paces up and down the slopes of vines to bring shine and depth to the fruity, floral and spicy nuances of its flavour and aroma palette.

This is limited to 210 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Burnished gold.

Aroma

Lively, original.

On the first nose, juniper aromas bring gin to mind. After this vegetal sequence, the aroma palette becomes vinous (very slightly beady natural white wine). Allowed to breathe, exotic fruits (kiwi, passion fruit) and citrus fruits (orange, mandarin) appear alongside notes of grape. Gradually, these different aroma sequences mix together, finding perfect fruity equilibrium.

Taste

Unctuous, fresh.

The attack is quite different from the nose and instead voluptuously fruity and deliciously chocolatey. On the mid-palate, whole bunches of very ripe white grapes release their tangy yet sweet juice.

The silky end of the palate is equipped with a beautiful thirst-quenching bitterness, and adds a floral (lime blossom, petunia), delicately spiced (candied ginger) and apricot touch that brings to mind a fine Savennières wine.

Finish

Long, well-balanced.

More autumnal (chestnut, sweet chestnut) and fabulously chocolatey, the start of the finish explores new, more southerly wine-growing lands. With more than a little in common with an oxidative vin de voile from the Gaillac appellation and produced with the Mauzac grape, the flavour palette is now incredibly full and silky.

The retro-nasal olfaction wavers between precious wood, exotic fruit (mango, guava), cocoa bean and incense. The empty glass is then majestically malty.

Chichibu 7 YO 2014 Peated Cask - 64.3% ABV

Single Cask #3812 - 2nd Fill Bourbon Barrel (LMDW exclusive)

Produced with unpeated Concerto barley, newmake is then matured in a cask previously used for storing heavily peated Chichibu single malt. The result is a whisky that takes a devilish pleasure in throwing us off track, the palette of flavours and aromas is linked together by slightly camphoric, resinous, salty and earthy sequences. With incredible nuance, throughout the tasting it takes us on the trail of an evanescent peat that anticipates the Chichibu 2014 Heavily Peated (See expression above).

This has an outturn of 187 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep gold.

Aroma

Refined, distinguished.

Revealing notes of candied pear, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla, the first nose wavers between voluptuousness and bitterness. An incredible opening! The slightly camphoric aroma palette then develops a more resinous (pine) and nobly malty register. Gradually, very sophisticated heady fragrances (iris, tuberose, lily) and lavender honey notes take centre-stage.

Taste

Elegant, full of energy.

The abundantly fruity attack (apple, pear, Mirabelle plum) is also herbaceous (camomile), spicy (star anise) and delicately woody. On the mid-palate, a handful of citrus (lemon, orange) and exotic fruits (pineapple, banana) highlight the tangy character of the flavour palette.

The rich end of the palate reveals flavours of candied almond and coconut.

Finish

Long, invigorating.

The start of the finish is extremely well-balanced and covered in a fine layer of green liquorice and toffee. The mouth-watering and salty end of the finish is characterised by notes of Calisson d’Aix and candied ginger. On the retro-nasal olfaction, acacia honey softly envelops the taste buds.

The full and deep empty glass brings to mind malting barley and rain-dampened, earthy paths.
