Johnnie Walker Vault Makes First Permanent Debut With Rare Revived Brora Whiskies

Diageo has debuted the first permanent prestige expression from the Johnnie Walker Vault, incorporating rare liquid from the revived Brora Distillery.

The assembly incorporates two distinct Highlands whiskies from Brora: a pre-mothballing parcel distilled prior to the distillery's closure in 1983, paired with liquid casked following the distillery's 2021 reopening 38 years later.

While recent production continues to build inventory, aged Brora stocks remain severely constrained, with the youngest pre-closure casks from 1983 now aged at least 43 years. Because Johnnie Walker Vault is a permanent core release requiring batch-to-batch consistency, managing these dwindling mature parcels presents a key blending constraint.

On the nose, the brand promises notes of butterscotch and salted caramel, which ‘give way to summer in the Highlands’ with wildflowers, green hills and fragrant barley, as well as toasted oak and driftwood bonfire.

The palate is said to bring flavours of vanilla, chopped almonds, frangipane tarte, Scottish raspberries, tropical fruits, subtle incense, rich charred oak, malty sweetness and hints of vintage leather and tobacco.

Master Blender Emma Walker also credits other distillery expressions in the blend: Clynelish for contributing a silky, creamy texture to the profile, complemented by sweet, smooth notes from aged stock of the closed Port Dundas distillery. Cardhu, a core component, supplies top notes of orchard fruit and subtle banana.

Launched in March 2025, the Johnnie Walker Vault serves as a dedicated platform housing 500 rare, aged, and ghost casks, which means blends that hail from the vault include single malts that have never before been used in a blend. The inventory is personally curated and systematically rotated to provide the foundation for the brand's top-tier releases.
