Do we ever lose excitement for Springbank - you know the answer to that, a resounding no!

And here we are with the third release from the Campbeltown distillery's Sherry series, a 10 Year Old Amontillado Sherry cask matured expression.

In 2022, Springbank had embarked on a Sherry series that had hoped to showcase the Springbank whisky as it is matured in various types of Sherry casks, from the most usual PX, to more uncommon styles such as Palo Cortado, Amontillado, Fino and Manzanilla.

Each type of Sherry expression would be released annually, and in 2024, we're into our third expression, Amontillado. This follows the first release, PX, and the second release, Palo Cortado. 

For the new Springbank Amontillado Cask Matured expression, the whisky has been matured for five years in refill Bourbon barrels, followed by five years in fresh Amontillado hogsheads made from American oak.

The whisky had been distilled in July 2014 and is due for bottling in September 2024 (right about now!), with a total outturn of 9,900 bottles to be bottled at 55% ABV.

Now for those unfamiliar with Sherry styles, this might help!

As we can see, Amontillado is actually a derivative style of Sherry that actually starts out as Fino, yet has been aged for 4-6 years in a Solera system. It is fortified to a higher ABV, which stops the flor layer from preventing further oxidation and imparting more rancio. This makes Amontillado a typically darker style, with heavy notes of roasted nuts, tobacco, spice and dried fruit, with a slight tangyness.
