This distillery exclusive bottling was part of a trio of 1994s, with the other two being a peated cask and a sherry cask. Funny thing is the 1994 sherry cask version won a top award at the 2018 World Whisky Awards.
Nose: like a light BBQ sauce, honey, meaty green fruits, mellowed purple grape skins, after some time I get light vanilla, apple soap, pear, "落雁" (Japanese hard candy), soybeans and sugar.
Palate: dry, seems to be a light bodied sour wood, initial palate is sharp, unrefined wood, mid palate is still sharp and sour, a little bitter, some butterscotch, but has some hints of coconut, leading to a major back of palate dried coconut shell, leaves, vanilla.
Finish: long, dry, burnt toast residue, hints of vanilla and coconut shell.
Flavors are strong on this one, gets spicy at the end and revolves around a vanilla and coconut flavor profile overall. Can't say it's bad since I can taste and sense quality, but can't say it's good since it's quite unfocused, unbalanced, and contains distracting flavors that don't add value to the experience. The back palate is where all the action was, consisting of mostly coconut.
