Glen Moray 27, d.1962, Italian Import, 43% abv.
Apparently Glen Moray started off as a brewery and converted to a distillery in 1897. Closed in 1910 only to be acquired by Glenmorangie in 1923. Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy buys Glenmorangie in 2004 but sells Glen Moray in 2008 to La Martiniquaise for their blends. Supposedly, while under Glenmorangie ownership, Glen Moray started producing "finished" whiskies, but it appears it went out of fashion when La Martiniquaise first acquired them. Unfortunately, even with such a long and relatively peaceful history, there are not many old barrels in OB and IB offerings.
Nose: strong toast, vanilla, Ichiro's Malt Card Series. These aromas dissipate with time.
Palate: sour, smooth, good body, initial palate is sweet, like honeyed limes, mid palate has wood, spices, honey coated bush leaves, becomes oily, back palate has some wood, borderline wet old steamed lotus leaves, but generally honey.
Finish: short, like a dry, sherried fruit cocktail, wood roots.
Dry glass: honeyed meats.
This one is a little different in the sense that it exhibits sour and sweet flavors, but during different times. Its generally honey, almost soup like, with varying flavors accompanying the tour.
Grade: B
