Dobel Tequila Releases Mezcal Barrel-Aged Extra Añejo Grandes Maestros Expression

In a marriage of two heavyweights in the agave-spirit world, Dobel tequila has kicked off their new range with a mezcal barrel-finished extra añejo!

In what it calls a "world's first", the Dobel Grandes Maestros is aged for a minimum of three years in new oak barrels and finished for a minimum of four months in American oak mezcal casks.

This is said to create an expression with notes of mezcal smoke, dried fruits, cooked agave, toasted nuts, and vanilla.

The packaging it comes in is also something special: artwork by Mexican contemporary artist Francisco ‘El Maestro’ Toledo, who unfortunately passed away in 2019.

The Francisco Toledo Edition is a legacy project that honors the late artist by featuring the last sculpture before his death, as well as capturing the creative collaboration between the artist and Juan Dobel, a master Tequila maker from the eleventh generation and the visionary behind Dobel Tequila.

The design of the bottle for this special release takes its cue from Toledo's 'Lagartos' series. Encased in a unique frosted bottle featuring etched artwork, this rare Tequila rests on a rotating four-cube wooden base, each side displaying Toledo's distinctive lizard motif.

Furthermore, each set includes a hand-carved Teotihuacan stone bottle stopper, a stone display pedestal, and a certificate guaranteeing its authenticity, personally signed by the artist.

This exclusive release comprises just 15 collection sets in the US, part of a worldwide availability of only 281 bottles.

Notably, one of these 15 Francisco Toledo Edition bottles will be featured in Artnet's inaugural curated spirits auction, with bidding concluding on April 29, 2025.

Dobel Tequila will contribute a portion of the auction proceeds to support the Friends of IAGO (Graphic Arts Institute of Oaxaca) and the Manuel Álvarez Bravo AC Photographic Center.

The remaining 14 bottles are available for purchase at US$5,000 through select high-end retailers and partner establishments.
