Johnnie Walker Debuts New On-Trade Paper Bottle

In a first for Johnnie Walker, the Diageo-owned brand has released a 90% paper-based 700ml bottle for Johnnie Walker Black Label, which will be trialed for on-trade use.

The bottle is composed of 90 per cent paper with a very thin plastic liner, which makes it 60 per cent lighter than your standard glass bottle. The plastic lining in the bottle is designed such that the user does not need to take the bottle apart for recycling. While the stopper is currently not recyclable, Diageo has said that this might change with further development.

The new bottle reportedly has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 47 per cent in comparison to the vessel of your standard Johnnie Walker Black Label. According to Diageo, the brand has plans to continue pursuing less carbon-intensive design and production, and will be explore other paper formats across the wider Johnnie Walker portfolio.

This isn't the first time Johnnie Walker's gotten creative with less waste in mind. Earlier this month, Diageo introduced the limited edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra, bottled in the lightest whisky bottle in the world.

For now, the bottle will now trialed exclusively at Johnnie Walker Princes Street’s 1820 Bar in Edinburgh, Scotland.
